As of January 2024, the number of hospitals founded by medical corporations in Japan amounted to 5,655 facilities, accounting for around 70 percent of the total hospitals available in the country.
The medical corporation system in Japan began in 1950 and is recognized under the Medical Law enacted in 1948. With the approval of a prefecture governor, hospitals and clinics can incorporate themselves and operate as non-profit organizations.
